Frequently when artists criticize religion through art the message or critique is attempted through degradation or satire which is considered unacceptable by others. Such as the early closure of an art exhibit in the Philippines last year where the face of Christ was disfigured in an exhibit (Aurelio, 2011).

Artists, throughout the years, have found multiple ways to express themselves, through drawing, painting, story-telling, composing, etc. The freedom to speak or express whatever is on one's mind has come to be universally known as an indicator of increasing development in countries (Fieser, 2008). Most of the time, regardless of censorship rules, artists remain to be famous and heard-of till this day. A perfect example would be Gustav Klimt, an Austrian painter, who is known for his famous painting, "The Kiss". He usually painted portraits of nude females, and although he was known as "the favorite portrait painter of Viennese ladies", he also had a few troubles with censorship and was severely criticized for his work. Regardless, he continued to make sure his work avoided any type of harsh comments by finding away to make his art more "easy on the eye"(Dorment, 2008).

If we don't have freedom of speech in Education then how is possible to get a useful use of our education. This what Camara tried sending to the world in here passage "If you live in a country where there is no freedom of speech, is getting an education a waste of time? In school you would be told what to think, government would use education as a way to preach their propaganda, you would not be able to question, criticize, and express your opinions, why go to school then?
ReplyDeleteAlso, Is it possible to have real freedom of speech? Some people believe that there is no such thing as complete freedom of speech anywhere in the world. What do you think? My country, Brazil, does not have real freedom of speech. Newpapers still get censored. A brazilian newspaper has been under censorship for a year now, they have been prohibited to publish any news about the investigations that a corrupt politician was going through."
This is why Curtis considered the Dark Ages to be Dark "men were denied the freedom to learn differently from what the Roman Church wanted them to know. If you said something that was not dogma, you were branded a heretic. "Witches" were what they called female heretics, and nearly 300,000 were burned at the stake. Many more men were tortured, tried, and killed. Yet most loved their Church and were often not aware they had spoken against it.
Literature and art and learning were all "darkened", turned off, except for what the Church wanted us to know. When the first Bibles in English were published they were confiscated and burned"

1) Eminem
ReplyDeleteEminem seems to be a very controversial subject for a long time now. The reason is because he has some vile and violent lyrics in his music. He also provoked abusing women and being violent towards gay people.
“The answer to bad speech is good speech, not government censorship.”

2) Pictures censored in magazines
The city’s print decides to censor pictures using a black marker. Honestly, I’ve seen such things in magazines and it makes no sense. The picture is not nude, but fully clothed. They just show a little more cleavage which is fine with most of the people who read the magazine.
